Gold trades on a global spot market, quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1 grams). The figure above is the raw metal value. When you buy coins or bars you pay a small premium over spot; when you sell scrap or jewelry you get a percentage of spot depending on purity.
What is my gold worth by karat?
Jewelry is rarely pure. Karat tells you the gold content: 24k is pure, 18k is 75% gold, 14k is 58.5%. Here is the melt value per gram at today's spot:
| Purity | Melt value / gram (USD) |
|---|---|
| 24k (.999 pure) | $141.61 |
| 22k | $129.84 |
| 18k | $106.31 |
| 14k | $82.92 |
| 10k | $59.11 |
A buyer of scrap gold typically pays 80 to 95 percent of melt, depending on purity and volume. Anything below 80 percent for clean, testable gold is a low offer. Bullion coins and bars trade close to melt plus a few percent.
Mexican gold coins
If you have a Mexican gold coin, its value is mostly its gold content. The 50 Pesos Centenario holds 1.2057 oz of pure gold; smaller Hidalgo coins (2.5 and 5 pesos) hold proportionally less. Check the live melt value before you buy or sell, and post photos in the Pesoteca forum for a second opinion.
