Compare with the peso and silver today

The euro often moves with the dollar, but with its own ECB-driven dynamics. If you convert between dollars and pesos, or buy precious metals, the day's exchange rate drives the final price.

How much is a US dollar worth in euros today?

One US dollar is worth €0.8614 at the interbank rate, which means 1 euro buys about $1.16. That interbank number is the wholesale reference banks, businesses, and exchange services use. At the counter you get a little less; the gap is the spread.

Interbank rate vs. the counter rate you actually get

The dollar-to-euro rate you face has three layers:

  • Interbank: the wholesale quote between banks with no margin. Only accessible for very large volumes.
  • Sell rate: what a provider charges if you buy euros with dollars. Usually 1-2% above the interbank rate.
  • Buy rate: what a provider pays if you sell euros for dollars. Usually 1-2% below the interbank rate.

The gap between buy and sell is the spread, and it is how the provider makes money. Cards and apps that convert at the interbank rate keep this cost close to zero.

What moves the dollar against the euro?

  • Federal Reserve decisions: higher US rates tend to strengthen the dollar against the euro.
  • European Central Bank (ECB) decisions: higher eurozone rates support the euro; the pair moves on the gap between the two.
  • Inflation and growth data: surprises on either side of the Atlantic shift the rate quickly.
  • Risk sentiment and geopolitics: the dollar is the global safe haven, so it often strengthens in times of stress.

How to lose less converting dollars to euros

  • For transfers: Wise, Revolut, or Remitly at or near the interbank rate usually beat traditional bank counters.
  • For travel to the eurozone: a card with no foreign-transaction fee that charges the interbank rate beats exchanging cash.
  • For saving in euros: a euro account or a broker (EUR ETF), weighing maintenance cost against real savings.
  • Always avoid: airport exchange kiosks (3-8% margin) and cards that do a double conversion.

History and trend

EUR/USD is the most heavily traded currency pair in the world, so it stays liquid and moves on macro data rather than one-off events. For longer horizons, consult official series from the European Central Bank and the international spot quote for reference.
