Why it will never be rare

A real error (an off-center strike, a wrong planchet, a genuine die break) has to be confirmed by a numismatist who handles Mexican coinage. Do not pay a premium, or expect a payday, based on a blurry photo and a hopeful caption.

How to tell if yours is genuine

Counterfeiting a 1 peso makes no economic sense, so fakes are rare. Still, to confirm a coin is a normal 2017 issue, check:

• Diameter: 21 mm
• Two-tone construction: a clean, defined line between the bronze center and the steel ring
• Obverse: the national coat of arms
