To Diligence Medal. Preparatoria y Liceo Fournier

This school medal was awarded as a prize for diligence (a la aplicación) at the Preparatoria y Liceo Fournier, one of many private schools that in 19th- and early 20th-century Mexico rewarded their best students with distinctions of this kind.

Student merit medals were a very widespread custom: they were handed out at end-of-year ceremonies to recognize effort, conduct, and achievement. Many were struck in silver and bore the name of the school, which today turns them into small windows onto the history of Mexican private education.

Cataloged by Grove as a school piece and worked in silver by the engraver Peña, this medal has no recorded year, but it clearly belongs to that tradition of academic prizes. Its value lies in the testimony of an educational institution and in the iconography of recognition for study.

What it shows

The obverse brings together a small academic still life: an armillary sphere on its pedestal, an open book, an inkwell with an upright quill, scrolls, and a set square, all symbols of study and the sciences. Around it runs the legend "ESCUELA PREPARATORIA I LICEO FOURNIER" with a star at the bottom. The reverse is more restrained: a laurel wreath encloses the inscription "PREMIO A LA APLICACION," the distinction the piece conferred.

Context

The Liceo Fournier was part of the network of French schools that opened in Mexico in the 19th century to educate the children of immigrant families. These schools often rewarded achievement with engraved medals, a European custom recorded here in pieces like this one. The engraving attributed to Peña finishes off the work.
