During the Porfiriato, the education of youth was a constant concern, inherited from liberal thought. Schools rewarded their most dedicated students with merit medals, as an incentive to study and recognition of effort.

Of reduced module, this piece was awarded at school ceremonies as a distinction to studious youth. It documents the tradition of recognizing academic achievement, grounded in the idea that instruction was the foundation of national progress. It reflects the value Mexican society placed on the education of the new generations, in which the country's hopes for development were vested.

What it shows

A bronze piece dated 1880. On the reverse, within a laurel wreath, is the central legend 2ª CLASE / 1880, surrounded by the circular inscription PREMIO A LA JUVENTUD ESTUDIOSA. The obverse carries the engraving AYUNTAMIENTO DE TETELA DE N. OCAMPO together with the word CONCEJO, all in period typography and with a beaded border on both sides.

Context

It is not a circulating coin, but a school award medal. It was granted by the town council of Tetela de Ocampo, in the northern sierra of Puebla, to recognize outstanding students. The "2ª clase" mark indicates it belonged to a tiered award system, a common practice in 19th-century Mexican municipalities to encourage study among the young.

Value and collecting

Being a municipal medal and not legal tender, its price does not depend on a face value but on rarity, demand, and above all the state of preservation: the wear of the relief and the sharpness of the legends rule.
