It documents the effort to bring education to remote places, in a Mexico that saw in teaching the key to progress and to the formation of citizens for the young republic.

What it shows

A small silver medal with a ring for hanging, mounted as a pendant. On one side, among vegetal scrolls, you can read the hand-engraved inscription "R.C. DE LOS RIOS A SUS ALUMNOS DE TLACOTPEC": the recognition given by a teacher or preceptor surnamed de los Ríos to his students. The other side keeps a field with the date "D. 1871" and very worn letters and figures ("S.J.", a name, and a number), typical of a personalized piece. The wear and the irregular letters reveal hand engraving, not series minting.

Context

In 19th-century Mexico it was customary to reward the most diligent students of the primary schools with silver or gold medals. There are records of such pieces going back to viceregal times, awarded by preceptors to their outstanding pupils. This Tlacotepec medal, dated 1871, belongs to that school tradition of rewarding merit.
