A los patriotas estudiantes Medal (1884)

This silver medal of 1884, dedicated to the patriot students, reflects the strong civic value that Porfirian society placed on educated youth. During the Porfiriato, Porfirio Díaz's regime promoted education as a pillar of its project of order and progress, and exalted students as future exemplary citizens.

Recognitions to students were usually awarded at school and patriotic ceremonies, where liberal discourse, the cult of the heroes of Independence, and the promise of a modern Mexico were blended.

Engraved by C. Ocampo G., an artist tied to the Mint, the piece belongs to merit medals. It is a small testament to how love of country was instilled in the new generations of the late 19th century.

What it shows

The reverse, which is the side almost everyone looks for, carries the legend engraved inside a laurel wreath: AMPLIACION Y GRATITUD. NOVIEMBRE 20 DE 1884. The obverse rings the rim with the inscription A LOS PATRIOTAS ESTUDIANTES, today partly worn, and at the center an open book with a radiant sun rising behind it, flanked by branches. At the foot appears the initial O of the engraver, C. Ocampo G.

Context

It is a Mexican medal of 1884 dedicated to students, with a message of gratitude dated November 20 of that year.
