In the summer of 1829, Brigadier Isidro Barradas landed at Tampico with an expedition sent from Cuba to try to recover Mexico for the Spanish crown. Mexican forces, led by Antonio López de Santa Anna and Manuel Mier y Terán, forced him to capitulate in September. The Spanish defeat definitively sealed Independence.
The triumph established Santa Anna as "vencedor de Tampico" and "Benemérito de la Patria." This piece commemorates that feat which, beyond the military figures, meant confirmation that Spain would never again rule in Mexico.
Description
The Al vencedor de Tampico medal is a bronze decoration that the State of Zacatecas had struck in 1829 to honor the Mexican victory over the Spanish reconquest expedition. That year, the troops under Antonio López de Santa Anna and Manuel Mier y Terán defeated brigadier Isidro Barradas at Tampico, and from that comes the title "the Victor of Tampico."
What it shows
It is an oval piece with a loop for hanging. The obverse bears the peripheral legend "EL ESTADO DE ZACATECAS AL VENCEDOR DE TAMPICO" and the date 1829 at the bottom. In the center is a coastal landscape with hills and a fortified position, crowned by a radiant sun with a face; below are grouped lances, crossed flags, and a cannon on its carriage, symbols of the military victory. The reverse, the main face of the listing, presents a Phrygian cap radiating light over the Mexican eagle devouring the serpent, all within a laurel wreath and surrounded by trophies of war: a drum, bugles, and standards.
