American Numismatic Association Medal. 1891

This medal refers to the American Numismatic Association (ANA) and the year 1891, the date when this prestigious association of coin collectors and scholars was founded in the United States. The ANA is one of the most important numismatic organizations in the world.

What it shows

The reverse, which is the main side, carries a Spanish galleon under full sail navigating over the waves, with the legend "MIGUEL LOPEZ DE LEGASPI" around the rim and the dates "1564 · 1964" at the foot. The obverse combines two symbols: a heraldic shield with three stars and a sun next to the Mexican eagle perched on the nopal, accompanied by the legends "AÑO DE LA AMISTAD," "MÉXICO · FILIPINAS" and the year "1964," plus some engraver's initials.

Context

In 1964 the fourth centennial was celebrated of the expedition that Legazpi set sail toward the Philippines in 1564, the voyage that shortly after opened the Manila-Acapulco Galleon route. That exchange united New Spain and the Philippines for centuries, and the medal captures that memory with the galleon as its central image.
