In 1843 the Bases Orgánicas were sanctioned, the constitution that consolidated the Second Centralist Republic with Santa Anna at the head of power. It was a period of exaltation of his figure, with tributes, monuments, and ceremonies that sought to entrench his personal cult.
For its imposing size and its high weight, this piece belongs to the grand-display medals with which the caudillo was glorified. It documents the peak of "santannismo", when the general presented himself as savior and providential man of a nation that, nonetheless, lived mired in recurring political and economic crises.
Description
A silver-plated bronze piece dated 1843, one of those objects Santa Anna had struck when he ruled Mexico as he pleased and wanted to be recorded in metal.
What it shows
One face carries all the weight: a Latin legend in several lines that opens with ANTONIUS L. DE SANTA-ANNA and continues with CUI ACCEPTAS REFERUNT PATRIA LIBERTATEM, PAX FIRMITATEM. At the foot it closes with the Roman date ANNO MDCCCXLIII (1843) and XVI CALEND OCTOB. The other face is a plain, silvered field, framed by a garland of laurel leaves running along the entire rim. You can see the wear and the scratches of time, honest for a medal nearly two centuries old.
Context
The year is no accident. In 1843 Santa Anna governed through an assembly tailored to his measure and fed his personal cult with statues, honors, and medals like this one. The inscription presents him as the one to whom the homeland owes liberty and firmness, discourse typical of his propaganda.
