Silver-plated copper medal of the Ayuntamiento (Town Council) of Aguascalientes, dated 1857, within the category of exhibition medals.

The second half of the nineteenth century saw the flourishing of industrial and agricultural exhibitions in various states, promoted by town councils and development societies. These fairs sought to boost local production, reward artisans and producers, and spread technical improvements. Aguascalientes, a land of agricultural and fair-going tradition, was no exception.

The year 1857 coincides with the promulgation of the new liberal Constitution. This piece reflects the interest of municipal governments in fostering the regional economy through competitions and prizes. Exhibition medals were awarded as a distinction to the most outstanding exhibitors.

The 1857 Aguascalientes City Council Medal is an oval piece with a ring, meant to be hung, that rewarded merit at the city's expositions in the mid-19th century.

What it shows

The obverse bears the legend engraved within a border of leaves and flowers: PREMIO DADO POR EL M.I. AYUNTAMIENTO DE AGUAS CALIENTES. The reverse presents an allegorical scene, now worn, with a curved legend at the top and the date DE 1857 at the foot. The wear of the relief reveals that it was used and worn, not kept in a display case.

Context

Between 1851 and 1891, Aguascalientes held nearly thirty editions of its Annual Exposition of Industry, Mining, Agriculture, and Art, tied to the San Marcos fair. A prize medal awarded by the city council in 1857 fits squarely within that tradition: it recognized outstanding producers and craftsmen of the region.
