Aguascalientes City Council Medal (1867)

Bronze medal of the City Council of Aguascalientes, dated 1867, within the category of exhibition medals.

With the triumph of the Restored Republic in 1867, Mexico entered a stage of reconstruction and economic promotion after years of war and foreign intervention. City councils and development societies promoted agricultural and industrial exhibitions to revive production and reward local artisans and producers.

Aguascalientes, with its fair and agricultural tradition, promoted contests of this kind. This piece was awarded as a distinction to outstanding exhibitors. It reflects the spirit of material progress that animated the country after the fall of the empire, when republican peace allowed attention to turn toward regional economic development.

What it shows

The reverse carries the circular legend AYUNTAMIENTO CONSTITUCIONAL DE MÉXICO around the edge and, at the center, within a laurel wreath, the inscription PREMIO AL MERITO INDUSTRIAL. The obverse presents an allegory: a standing female figure surrounded by objects of industry and labor (tools, bales, a spindle, products), with the legend EXPOSICION MUNICIPAL at the border and the date 1873 at the bottom.

Context

It is an award medal from the Mexico City council (Ayuntamiento), given at one of the municipal expositions the council organized to recognize the best exhibitors of manufacture and craftsmanship. The allegorical scene and the date 1873 engraved on the die place it within that cycle of industrial contests of the last third of the nineteenth century.

Value and collecting

This piece weighs 18.01 g and measures 33.89 mm in diameter. It is not legal tender: it was never used to pay, but to mark a merit, so its value is set by condition, metal, and how sought-after the subject is.
