Mexico City Council Medal (1873)

During the Restored Republic and the early years of the Porfiriato, Mexico City organized expositions of products, arts, and industries to encourage economic progress and reward the most outstanding exhibitors. The capital's council promoted these contests as a show of modernity and development.

These medals were awarded as a distinction to outstanding participants. The piece reflects the spirit of material advancement that animated the country after years of war, when peace allowed energies to be poured into industry, agriculture, and the arts. What it shows

The reverse, which is the main face, carries the legend AYUNTAMIENTO CONSTITUCIONAL DE MÉXICO engraved around it and, at the center, within a laurel wreath tied with a bow, the inscription in three lines: PREMIO AL MERITO INDUSTRIAL. On the obverse a standing female figure appears, an allegory of industry, surrounded by bales, a beehive, a textile spindle, barrels, and tools of the trades; framing her is the legend EXPOSICION MUNICIPAL and, below, the year 1873.

Context

It is an award medal: the Mexico City council (Ayuntamiento) gave it to the outstanding exhibitors of a municipal exposition held in 1873, at the height of the industrial fairs of nineteenth-century Mexico. The laurel wreath and the allegory of labor are the classic visual language of these merit awards.
