Cuauhtémoc Training Ship Medal (1993)

This medal is dedicated to the Training Ship Cuauhtémoc, the flagship sailing vessel of the Mexican Navy. Built in the shipyards of Bilbao and delivered in 1982, it is the ship on which the cadets of the Heroic Naval School carry out their practices and goodwill cruises around the world.

Known as the knight of the seas, the Cuauhtémoc bears the motto Por la exaltación del espíritu marinero, and represents Mexico in regattas and port visits on every continent.

Minted in silver in 1993, the piece honors this floating embassy of the Navy, a symbol of Mexican naval pride and of the training of its future sea officers.

Context

The Cuauhtémoc, with a length of 90.5 meters, three masts, and 23 sails, was delivered to the Navy in July 1982 as a training ship for officers, cadets, and midshipmen. It was the fourth and last of the great sailing ships that Celaya built for the Spanish-American navies. A 1993 medal fits with its first decade of training voyages and diplomatic representation.
