This gilt bronze medal of 1809, engraved by Francisco Gordillo, commemorates the proclamation of Fernando VII promoted by the Colegio de Santa Cruz of Oaxaca. Although the king had been proclaimed in 1808, many oaths and their medals extended into 1809, especially those of corporations and institutions.
New Spain had sworn fidelity to Fernando VII in absentia, recognizing him as the legitimate king against the usurper Joseph Bonaparte imposed by Napoleon. That an Oaxacan college issued its own medal shows how educational institutions joined the homage to the captive monarch.
