Medal of proclamation and swearing-in of the Mexican Constitution of 1843, engraved by L. Rovira. It commemorates the promulgation of the Bases Orgánicas de la República Mexicana.
Sanctioned in June 1843, the Bases Orgánicas gave form to the Second centralist Republic, under the leadership of Antonio López de Santa Anna. They reaffirmed the country's independence and its organization as a centralist republic, replacing the Seven Laws of 1836.
The medals for swearing in constitutions served to solemnize the oath of the authorities and the people to the new order. This silver piece documents one of the many constitutional experiments of the turbulent nineteenth-century Mexico, in which federalists and centralists repeatedly disputed the organization of the nation.
