This gilt bronze medal of 1809, engraved by José M. Guerrero, commemorates the proclamation of Ferdinand VII promoted by the College of San Pablo, one of the educational institutions of the viceroyalty. Although the king was proclaimed in 1808, the colleges' oaths of allegiance extended into 1809.
New Spain had sworn loyalty to Ferdinand VII in absentia, recognizing him as the legitimate king against the usurper Joseph Bonaparte imposed by Napoleon. That a college issued its own medal shows how each educational corporation wanted to leave a record of its loyalty to the captive monarch.
José M. Guerrero, a prolific engraver in the capital after Gil's death, signed numerous pieces of these oaths of allegiance. The gilt bronze corresponded to prestige examples.
