This gilt bronze medal from 1809, engraved by Francisco Gordillo and pierced for hanging, commemorates the proclamation of Fernando VII promoted by the Tridentine College of Guadalajara, the seminary of New Galicia. Although the king was proclaimed in 1808, the oaths of allegiance by the institutions continued into 1809.
The piercing is a telling detail: the piece was holed to be worn hanging, as a visible sign of loyalty to the captive monarch. These medals were worn on the neck or on clothing during the oath festivities.
New Spain had sworn fidelity to Fernando VII in absentia, against the usurper Joseph Bonaparte imposed by Napoleon.
