Puebla Medal. El Colegio Carolino (1809)

This silver medal of 1809, engraved by José M. Guerrero, commemorates the proclamation of Fernando VII promoted by the Colegio Carolino of Puebla, a Puebla educational institution that bore the name in honor of the reigning dynasty. Although the king was proclaimed in 1808, the colleges' oaths of allegiance extended into 1809.

New Spain had sworn fidelity to Fernando VII in absentia, recognizing him as the legitimate king against the usurper Joseph Bonaparte imposed by Napoleon. Puebla, a great episcopal city, had several prestigious colleges that joined the oaths with their own medals.

José M. Guerrero, a prolific engraver after Gil's death, gave shape to this well-sized silver piece. The participation of the Puebla colleges in the proclamations of 1808-1809 reflects the city's enlightened atmosphere on the eve of the War of Independence, when the crisis of the Spanish monarchy was beginning to stir consciences in the viceroyalty.
