The Imperial Order of Guadalupe had been originally created by Agustin de Iturbide in 1822. After several reestablishments, emperor Maximilian decreed its renewed statutes in 1865, organizing it into grades to reward civil and military merit. It was the empire's highest distinction.
This piece commemorates that restoration, a gesture by which Maximilian sought to symbolically link his regime with the first Mexican empire of Iturbide.
