This medal from 1761 commemorates the oath of allegiance to Carlos III, the king who ascended the Spanish throne in 1759 and whose proclamation was celebrated in New Spain throughout 1760 and 1761. It comes from San Miguel el Grande, the prosperous town of the Bajío that a century later would be renamed San Miguel de Allende in honor of the insurgent hero born there.
It bears the associated name of José María de la Canal, almost certainly a member of the influential Canal family, merchants and benefactors who dominated the economic life of the town. It was customary for a notable to sponsor the proclamation medal of his city as a personal act of loyalty.
