How to tell if your banknote is worth more than its face value

Not every old banknote is worth a fortune, but some do surprise you. These are the four things collectors check (what the hobby calls notaphily, the collecting of paper money):

Condition. An uncirculated note, with no folds or stains and with the corners intact, is worth far more than a worn one.
Special serial number. Low, palindromic (reads the same forwards and backwards) or repeated serial numbers are what collectors look for.
Printing errors. Misaligned cuts, smeared ink or factory folds turn a common note into a rarity.
Rarity of the issuer or the year. Private-bank notes from the Porfiriato era or low-print-run commemoratives are worth more because they're scarce.
