The Onza Libertad ("Liberty Ounce") is Mexico's official silver bullion coin, struck every year by the Casa de Moneda de México, the national mint. It carries no face value. What it is worth comes down to one thing: it contains one full troy ounce of pure silver.

The reverse shows the Winged Victory, better known as the Ángel de la Independencia (the Angel of Independence monument in Mexico City), standing on her pedestal with the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes and the city skyline behind her. The legend reads "1 ONZA PLATA PURA LEY .999" (one ounce of pure silver, .999 fine).

The obverse carries the Mexican national coat of arms in the center, ringed by historic versions of the arms. This is the classic design used across the series since 1996.

How to tell if yours is genuine

Counterfeits of silver bullion exist, and the good news is that this coin is easy to check at home:

• Weight: it must weigh 31.103 g. A precision scale settles most doubts.
• Diameter: 40 mm across, with a reeded (grooved) edge.
• Magnet test: .999 silver is not magnetic. If a magnet pulls on it, it is not solid silver.
• Sound and look: genuine silver has a distinct ring and a soft luster, not the gray flatness of a plated fake.

If the weight or diameter is off, or a magnet grabs it, be suspicious. A precision scale and a caliper resolve most questions before you ever pay or sell.

Where to sell it

Sell it as silver, priced against the day's spot. Buyers include coin dealers, precious-metal buyers, and online bullion sellers. Always ask for a price referenced to the current silver spot so you are not paid below the metal itself.

1 troy oz Libertad silver 2015 Regular BU

This piece is the 1 troy oz silver Libertad, minted by the Mexico City Mint in 2015 in its Regular BU version.

Technical data. It contains 31.1 g of pure silver, .999 fineness, and measures 40 mm in diameter. The reverse bears the effigy of the Angel of Independence, chosen by Banxico as the official symbol of the series since 1981. The obverse shows the National Coat of Arms in its pre-1969 version, alongside other historical coats of arms as the family's mark of identity.

Role within the set. It is the flagship piece of the series. Its annual mintage is the highest of the whole set and it is Mexico's official bullion reference. Collectors and physical-silver investors always seek out this denomination first.

Context of the year. In 2015 Enrique Peña Nieto was in office. Silver closed at 13.82 USD per troy ounce, one of the lowest prices of the period. A historically good year for assembling the complete set.

Regular BU finish. The Regular finish, catalogued by Banxico as satin or BU, is obtained with dies that receive no special polishing. The result is an even matte luster across the whole surface, with no mirror contrast between fields and relief. It is the traditional bullion finish: it is bought for its weight in pure silver plus a modest minting premium. It is the version collectors seek to build the complete set year by year without decapitalizing on every piece.

Mintage. Banxico reported in its official tables a minting of 708,049 pieces for this combination of fraction, year, and finish. That number is the basis for measuring the piece's relative scarcity within the program.
